EFnet?) before being created on freenode. It's in there somewhere in the mailing list archive. 11:20:46 https://esoteric.sange.fi/archive/2002-q4 and search for "[chat] Esolang IRC channel". 11:21:38 So... created as #esoterica on EFnet on Mon, 9 Dec 2002, and them pretty much immediately after as #esoteric on OPN/Freenode. 11:23:12 The mailing list archives themselves go back to 19 Apr 2001, but that's the "new" email list, I don't think there are archives of the "old" mailing list. 11:23:38 how much of esolang history is preserved? One problem is that they're losing variance in the software. You see phones sold under a dozen different brand names, but most of them run the same terrible software that they purchase from Nokia and slightly modify, usually for the worse. A trend that all the phone software do now is that if you press a 23:04:07 second button while already holding down the previous one, the second button takes its action. This is a bad idea, because on small low quality plastic keypads, it's way too easy to fat finger a second button, and since you're using the keypads with one finger, you don't usually want to deliberately press a new button while the previous one is already held. This is something that calculators have 23:04:13 figured out by the 90s, probably before that but I just wasn't there, but somehow phones started to lose this basic ability after 2010. WHY? 23:05:06 -!- stolen has quit (Quit: Connection closed for inactivity). 23:06:06 The Nokia software in most of those phones absolutely doesn't let you save entries in the calendar with past timestamps. And the calendar is limited to, I think, 20 entries or so. Half of the phones doesn't have a notes app, which is, you know, just the text editor that they already have and saving the text into phone memory, the other half have a notes app but limit the notes to very short length. All 23:06:12 these problems apply alike to the phones that I already have, and the ten year later phones that I can buy in stores right now. 23:07:17 I understand the part where the cameras in most of the non-smart phones suck, that genuinely makes the phones cheaper. But why is the software getting worse when the cheap hardware they run on is more than enough for the improvements? 23:10:28 The difference is that among the phones that I could buy ten years ago, more of them ran custom software that isn't just the Nokia one with a different default wallpaper. The custom software still sucked, but at least they sucked in different ways so you had something of a choice. 23:10:48 I wonder if there's a market for programmable phones 23:10:50 -!- amby has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer). 23:24:24 ais523: do the old phones that can run java applets, mostly games, count? anyway, I personally don't want a programmable phone, because in general I don't want a very capable phone. half of the reason why I want a dumb phone is that I'm already spending time with computers at home and work, and this will be the case no matter what my next job will be. I don't want to also spend time with computers in 23:24:30 between the two, where I don't get a cool large monitor or a good full-sized keyboard. If I want computer for travel I'll buy a laptop, I have plans for that, but a phone can't replace the function. I just want a phone with clock, phone book exportable and importable to SD card, voice call, SMS, calendar, notes, four-function calculator, all functioning. Ideally I'd also want a music player and radio, 23:24:36 but I've kind of given up on that and accepted that it's a separate small device. The stretch goal would be reliable Bluetooth microphone and speaker for voice calls, but I can accept that that's an actually difficult problem that the phone developers don't want to spend resources on. 23:25:10 There are phones that can't export and import their phone book, even though they have a camera and an SD card slot for saving photos. 23:25:21 well, the thought was more that if you wanted a simple phone, it would be easy to convert a programmable phone into one 23:26:31 I would also like to be able to assign different ringtones to different callers, and most phones support this. And I forgot to mention alarm clock. 23:27:27 ais523: hmm. I guess that might work. so it's a programmable phone and I install a program on it from an SD card? 23:27:46 right (note that I don't know that such phones exist, it's just a hypothetical idea) 23:27:52 actually I can imagine one that runs entirely from an SD card 23:28:05 in much the same way that laptops run entirely from their hard disk / SSD 23:29:47 Sure, that could work if they have enough RAM. Most of the phones just have a small fixed solid state memory in them already. 23:30:33 "enough RAM" could actually be fairly small 23:31:07 On the positive side, fewer of the phones that I can buy now have the terrible flat keypads where you can't feel where the buttons are and can't use without looking. 23:31:24 I think that, at least if you didn't need to do signal processing in software, the capabilities of an old DOS PC would be enough (i.e. 640KiB of RAM) 23:41:46 [[Talk:Mentos]] N https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?oldid=195232 * Aadenboy * (+675) what if it was self-modifying? 23:49:30 [[Mentos]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=195233&oldid=195220 * Aadenboy * (+18) cat 23:56:48 Ooh, good old J2ME. 23:56:51 Is that still kicking? 23:58:17 Even if you program it by yourself (which can be helpful) the appropriate hardware might also be needed, such as the appropriate keyboard, microphone, display, connectors, etc.
