18:56:46 <blu256> what's bad about unicode?
18:58:09 <riv> ASCII is good
18:58:18 <riv> 7 bits are enough for everyone
18:59:43 <blu256> ASCII is good enough for english
19:04:56 <zzo38> There are many problems. For one thing, no single encoding or character set can ever be suitable for all purposes. Also there is the Han unification, and other decisions, that might be suitable for some applications but are otherwise very bad, and Unicode is also full of messy things. Writing text in foreign languages is OK as long as I don't have to use a Unicode to do it.
19:07:31 <blu256> Sure enough there are problems, but it is a better approach than, say, codepages.

19:11:41 <zzo38> I disagree, and think that which approaches can be better can depend on applications. (Maybe, I should make up "international text dealing library" without Unicode.)
19:12:41 <zzo38> (TRON has advantages and disadvantages over Unicode, but they made it worse by just dumping Unicode in there instead of doing it properly.)
19:16:26 <zzo38> I do mainly use the code pages. Currently Free Hero Mesh can only use code pages of 8-bit characters, although I do intend later might also add possibility of other kinds too such as EUC-JP, etc.
19:17:56 <blu256> sorry, but what is Free Hero Mesh?

19:21:54 <zzo38> The category (as in mathematical category theory) of code page conversions can be possible, each conversion also a nonnegative penalty number. Some conversions might lose character properties even if the characters themself can be converted, and might also add or lose ambiguity. This is true also in the case of Unicode, too.
