03:10:40 <zzo38> There are some different formats for specifying file formats, such as MIME, UTI, etc. However, I have my own idea of another way, too, since other one has a few problems.
03:11:57 <zzo38> MIME can only specify two things, which are required to match. UTI only specifies one thing but multiple inheritance (conformance) is possible, although the conformance is not a part of the name itself; the use of non-ASCII characters is also problematic, I think.
03:13:03 <zzo38> My own idea is simply you can specify a set of parts, optionally including parameters (such as code page numbers), and maybe also sub-parts (e.g. audio/video codecs inside of a container format).
03:15:38 <zzo38> For example, a PostScript file might be either text or binary format, and the usage type of the file might be as a "document", "program", or "picture". A Ogg file might be audio or video or both, and might use some codecs, which might also be used in other container formats. A EPUB file is also a ZIP file, a Fossil repository file is also a SQLite database file, etc. There are also polyglot files.
03:16:13 <zzo38> MIME and UTI support some of these uses, but not all, and not always working so well.

09:07:16 <zzo38> I think that maybe a HTTP response header should be added in case the browser does not understand the file being loaded. It can occur mode than once and consists of the MIME type and then a space and the URL; depending on the URI scheme of the target URL, a MIME type might not be applicable in which case an asterisk is used instead.
09:08:37 <zzo38> If it is a file type (or URI scheme) that would be expected in this context, then it will load that file instead but keep the same current URL, so it is similar to a redirect in this way but does not actually redirect; relative links are relative to the old URL instead of the new one, window.location is the old URL and not the new one, etc.
09:09:36 <zzo38> If it is a JavaScript or WebAssembly or something like that (if the user has enabled those things), then those can be executed to convert the file (for example, this might be suitable for implementing picture formats).
09:13:18 <zzo38> The end user should also be able to configure this feature, although with suitable defaults. Then, it can allow working files that might not be supported but the end user can also install their own implementation of that file instead if not wanting to use those ones (e.g. due to being more efficient by native code, using a file format with better capabilities for this use, etc).

17:15:01 <Taneb> Do either CH or ¬CH have interesting consequences
17:25:11 <Corbin> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freiling%27s_axiom_of_symmetry might be one. ZFC knows that this axiom is equivalent to ~CH, it seems.
