23:29:37 <zzo38> What other programming languages have any of the bitwise operators of INTERCAL (and which ones)? I think sometimes the bit interleave and bit select operators are occasionally useful in other programs. I think some versions of x86-64 have a bit select operation, but does any operating system emulate it, yet?
23:30:31 <zzo38> Now there is a ,Morton operator in Free Hero Mesh which is like the bit interleave operator in INTERCAL, too, and is meant for doing things like: (INIT Image Morton =Shovable)
23:33:09 <zzo38> I think emulation of unimplemented instructions in the operating system was mentioned on here before too
23:34:36 -!- oerjan has quit (Quit: Nite).
23:38:14 <Corbin> zzo38: Under a different name, it shows up in some GPU hardware (nVidia IIRC) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z-order_curve
23:39:03 <fizzie> It's not exactly a programming language, but the x86 "BMI2" extension's instructions PDEP and PEXT are slightly similar to them (with the right sort of mask).
23:39:51 <fizzie> PEXT and INTERCAL select especially.
23:40:12 <zzo38> O, yes, I suppose that is the extension that I meant. Does any operating system emulate the instruction if you are using a computer that lacks the BMI2 extension in the hardware?
23:41:51 <zzo38> If some GPU hardware has it, does SPIR-V have such a thing?
23:42:49 <esolangs> [[Teramithic]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=93192&oldid=93165 * Digital Hunter * (+421) /* Examples */ talked about good wildcards to use
23:42:53 <fizzie> I seem to recall QEMU can emulate at least some processor features when the host system is missing them, but I couldn't find documentation on it readily, and I don't know if it does that one even if it does support the general concept.
23:47:36 <zzo38> I still think that the MOR and MXOR instructions of MMIX are useful, although I don't know if other instruction sets have such things (other than maybe 64-bit WebAssembly?) I had seen the bit manipulation instructions of RISC-V once (although I forget what it said), and I thought it is worse than MMIX; the bit select operator also could be useful but might be difficult to be implemented efficiently
23:49:40 <zzo38> (Also MOR you can deal with the PDP-endian easily enough too, if you have file formats that use it)
