14:00:47 <b_jonas> the brilliant part about "authorization" and "authentication" is that "authorization" derives from the word "author", but it's "authentication" that's concerned with determining who the author is. etymology often doesn't make sense. and in this case it's not even entirely the fault of English, only partially.
14:01:16 <b_jonas> basically "author" had multiple meanings even in latin, and english just chose the one that results in this unfortunate situation
14:03:55 <int-e> there's also "authority" in the mix which is closer to "authorization"
14:23:01 <b_jonas> whereas "authorization" derives from the greek word "auto", which means self, and so is closer to authentication
14:23:56 <b_jonas> obviously at this point it would be a bad idea to just swap the meanings back, rather if we don't like the etymology we should just replace them with unrelated words
14:25:18 <int-e> I have bigger gripes.
14:25:34 <int-e> No. 1 is "inflamable". No. 2 are the pronunciations of "finite" and "infinite".
14:26:01 <int-e> Or inflammable. That double-m is also getting me a lot.
14:39:49 <b_jonas> int-e: how about the pronunciation of "sign" and "signal", or of "cycle" and "bicycle"?
14:40:31 <b_jonas> there are probably word choices that we could popularize instead of authentication and authorization that have just as many problems
14:40:39 <int-e> I don't mind those as much, they tend to appear in different contexts.
14:41:50 <b_jonas> different context? cycle and bicycle mean literally the same vehicle
14:42:33 <int-e> I don't call the vehicle that. (Though there is "cycling")
14:42:52 <int-e> cycles are for graphs ;)
14:43:07 <b_jonas> do you call it bike, which many people use for motorbikes? I approve of that, it's nicely ambiguous
14:44:19 <b_jonas> also what do you call the verb to ride on such a vehicle? cycle, bicycle, bike, or just ride?
14:45:00 <b_jonas> or pedal perhaps, which is derived from a word that means foot and is related to pedestrian, so basically means to walk on foot
14:46:01 <fizzie> Don't mind me, I'm just peddling my bicloid.
14:47:23 <b_jonas> I guess you could call the vehicle velo, short for velocipède, which must means fast walking on foot or running based on its etymology
14:47:42 <b_jonas> er, vélo and vélocipède presumably
14:50:04 <b_jonas> heck, why not call it fiets, which has an unclear etymology but sounds like the english word feets, so also clearly means walking on foot
14:53:23 <b_jonas> heck, just call it "kerékpár", the less often used formal word for a bicycle in Hungarian, which means pair of wheels, and as such sounds like it's a mirror translation for bicycle invented by Kazinczy, although I don't think it actually is because bicycles were rare back then
14:55:33 <b_jonas> or call it the somewhat less obvious but still descriptive pejorative word "drótszamár"
14:56:00 <int-e> b_jonas: I call it a bike or a bicycle, depeding.
14:58:10 <int-e> Let's go with riding :P
14:58:29 <int-e> Just to sidestep the discussion. (See also above where I already admitted that the verb is problemantic.)

20:03:58 <b_jonas> I would like to suggest "engedélyezés" as the confusing alternative for "authorization". It means something close enough, but it comes from "enged" which means permit, and while it has an unclear etymology, you could suspect that it is related to "én" or "engem", and thus should mean authentication rather than authorization.
20:04:17 <b_jonas> but I don't know of a good replacement for "authentication" that would be similarly confusing etymologically
