18:32:58 <b_jonas> I have this stupid idea for an anti-horror film scene. so our graverobbers are breaking into an egyptian pyramid. they come into this chamber with hundreds of clay statues. one of the characters explains that the statues can magically reanimate, they are servants who defend the paraoh's soul. as soon as they enter the chamber, the magic trap activates and the the room starts to glow around the statues.
18:33:04 <b_jonas> the character then explains that there are 366 servants, one for every day, so they'll only have to fight the one servant assigned for that day and the rest will remain inanimate.
18:36:17 <int-e> . o O ( The twist is that this happens just before midnight )
18:37:01 <b_jonas> int-e: no, the twist is that even one servant would be powerful enough to deal with the whole party, but there are 360 (or 365) servants and there's none assigned for this day
18:39:46 <b_jonas> earlier in the film, outside the pyramid they confront a team from Wizards of the Coast. the Wizards team tells them that the party's guesses were correct, Wizards helped build this 3800 year old pyramid with time travel shenanigans, as a marketing gimmick for the Amonkhet set. however, the party isn't allowed in yet until release day, the pyramid was discovered a few weeks too early by accident. (this
18:39:52 <b_jonas> is based on a real event, a pyramid was discovered in 2017-04.) the party tries to enter, so the Wizards team blocks their way and prepare their decks. the party watches what terrible egyptian curses they're going to summon. but Wizards only summons a few wood elves and gnomes and the like, because they're under an NDA and can't reveal anything from Amonkhet yet.
19:00:27 <ais523> they should be summoning, say, ancient crabs and giant spiders
19:00:40 <ais523> (just checked the list for which cards in Amonkhet were reprints)

19:17:04 <b_jonas> ais523: the previous sets are Kaladesh and Aether Revolt, which should have enough appropriate things to summon. Kaladesh has artifacts that you'd find among traps in a pyramid, like Deadlock Trap, Puzzleknot cycle, Narnam Cobra, Perpetual Timepiece.
19:20:26 <b_jonas> Eldritch Moon has some undead
19:25:07 <b_jonas> of course it can go the opposite way too. "Graverobber: You're bluffing. Amonkhet cards are not legal until the release. / MaRo: Not legal in DCI-sanctioned events. As Wizards workers we're banned from those anyway." Turns out, the Wizards team got some Amonkhet cards approved for preview to defending the pyramid.

21:13:07 <ais523> tromp: with respect to the "smallest self-interpreter challenge", I created a language that can self-interpret in fewer bits than BLC, without obviously cheating: https://esolangs.org/wiki/Advance_The_Wheel!
21:13:11 <ais523> of course, it's somewhat less elegant
21:15:22 <ais523> was fun to make, though, and really helped get me thinking in terms of how to efficiently implement low-level esolangs in each other; it uses a form of control flow that I don't think I've ever seen before
21:17:06 <ais523> in which, effectively, if statements cyclically permute the meaning of all commands in the rest of the program (but one of the commands permutes them all back again), and there are plenty of no-op commands in order to make it reasonably possible to write a program that has the desired effect in two or three different permutations
