21:13:17 <fizzie> Without looking at any of the links (I'm on vacation), DSPs are another place where you see non-8-bit bytes.
21:14:48 <fizzie> We had a university course for DSP programming, and it had examples of both 16-bit (TI TMS320C54x), 24-bit (Motorola DSP56k) and 32-bit (Analog Devices SHARC) bytes as one of the possible platforms you could do the programming project on. Probably because that's what the university had development kits for.
21:16:11 <fizzie> We did the C54x, which is mostly 16-bit, in the sense of that being the size of its addressable memory units and most registers, though it did have two 40-bit accumulators as well.
21:20:34 <fizzie> It also wasn't really a VLIW or even a LIW, but it did have a couple of instructions that sort of extended your usual fused multiply-add towards that direction, like (an example from our project) `ST B, *AR4+0% || MPY *AR2+, B`.
21:23:16 <fizzie> Which stores the old value of the B accumulator into the address pointed at by register AR4, post-increments AR4 using a ring buffer addressing mode using the base and modulo values from ring buffer control register set 0, and at the same time also updates B by multiplying it by the value pointed at by register AR2, which it post-increments.
21:27:51 <fizzie> At least some C implementations on the DSP56k I believe have a setup where CHAR_BIT == 24, sizeof (char) == sizeof (short) == sizeof (int) == 1, and sizeof (long) == 2, so 24-bit ints and 48-bit longs. And no integer type big enough for `long long`.
21:30:47 -!- tromp has quit (Quit: My iMac has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…).
21:32:48 <int-e> aww imaging long long being 72 bits
