22:09:43 <hppavilion[1]> I'm really liking the idea lately of languages that implore you *not* to think about numbers. It's difficult to do that if you want one that allows for I/O since strings are almost always just numbers. Thue pulls it off.
22:12:24 <hppavilion[1]> But user I/O doesn't actually have to be strings. That's just the most convenient way to think about things. So now I like the idea of a language which asks for input, and provides output, in other formats.
22:16:30 -!- tromp has joined.
22:30:52 <hppavilion[1]> For example, imagine a language in which all data revolves around rooted trees. A user input might be another rooted tree, whose root is attached as a child to the root of the "main" tree. An output might be made by identifying one particular child of the root and "printing" that subtree.
22:37:34 -!- Sgeo has joined.
22:38:46 <hppavilion[1]> You *could* then make an intermediate I/O machine that implements an input injection from strings to rooted trees and an output surjection from rooted trees to strings, but I imagine that would lead to cumbersome and unintuitive programming. It would be much more interesting--and stranger--to force the user to speak in trees themselves.
23:09:23 <zzo38> Does the tree have data at any nodes?
23:35:48 -!- tromp has quit (Quit: My iMac has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…).
23:46:36 <hppavilion[1]> zzo38: I was imagining a case in which there's no data stored inside the nodes, and so all memory is encoded by the structure of the tree itself, and all memory manipulation by certain tree rewriting operations. But that was just a hypothetical example, not a fully-fleshed-out language.
