AFAICS the first type is basically "classic", you make all the slices and stack them. Only features colored basic shapes. The second type uses new features, crystals, and, presumably, pins later on.

The thing they say they want to address is the tendency to strip down what you've built after an objective is completed.

Especially because when you switch from one layer to another vertically, you only get one connection on the two levels that you connect. so there's some zig-zagging involved.
