07:09:46 <MarkFan8901> and what we need rn is a form of control flow which doesnt need a concept of blocks to work
07:11:08 <MarkFan8901> we've been thinking about it in terms of trying to make a "pure" stack-based control flow structure

07:11:44 <de67> hi MarkFan8901
07:12:48 <MarkFan8901> we're basically saying we need to spice up our lang more
07:13:27 <de67> thatll for sure make it more zesty
07:13:45 <de67> so its forth alike
07:14:20 <de67> replace stacks with queues cuz who doesnt want misleading names?
07:14:42 <MarkFan8901> what we need specifically is a keyword for control flow
07:14:58 <de67> how about gotostart?
07:14:59 <MarkFan8901> one which could theoretically be put randomly into a program and still work
07:15:56 <de67> how about pjsz, which stands for Pop and Jump to Start if Zero
07:16:13 <de67> how about match & case like python
07:17:10 <MarkFan8901> MarkFan8901: `choose` skips the next command if the top of the stack isnt 0
07:17:23 <MarkFan8901> the issue with that is that it wouldnt work if it were appended to the very end of a program
07:18:18 <de67> how about p2jseq, which stands for Pop 2 elements and Jump to Start if EQual
07:18:48 -!- Lord_of_Life has joined.
07:19:13 <de67> how about p2ssneqp
07:19:45 <de67> which stands for Pop 2, Subtract, Skip Next if EQual, Push the result
07:20:18 <MarkFan8901> MarkFan8901: the context for this is that its for genetic programming
07:20:48 <MarkFan8901> basically randomly generating, mutating, and selecting programs to compute a certain function
07:21:07 <de67> how about pop2revneq, POP 2, REVerse stack if Not EQual
07:21:08 <MarkFan8901> what we need is a control flow structure which withstands typical genetic operators
07:21:59 <MarkFan8901> youre thinking of an instruction which is basically a concealed if statement
07:22:13 <de67> i think i need to base it on something an existing system
07:22:24 <de67> like cyclic tag systems
07:22:53 <de67> do you really need branchless paradigm?
07:22:55 <MarkFan8901> we're thinking more along the lines of how useful control flow could be created accidentally with them
07:23:19 <de67> but you dont want if statements!
07:24:08 <MarkFan8901> ideally we would want a control structure where you could easily bumble into an if statement by random chance
07:24:19 <MarkFan8901> yet which is still flexible enough to be included anywhere in the program
07:24:30 <MarkFan8901> and could potentially construct other useful structures
07:24:58 <MarkFan8901> your match & case suggestion might actually have some teeth here honestly
07:24:58 <de67> how about prnn, which stands for Pop, Repeat Next instruction N times
07:25:04 <de67> here N is the popped number
07:25:13 <esolangs> [[Gray Snail]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=198578&oldid=123834 * Squidmanescape * (+768) /* Implementations */
07:25:28 <MarkFan8901> thats actually very interesting to think about
07:25:41 <MarkFan8901> cuz that gets across both if statements (for 0 and 1) and loops (2+)
07:25:48 <MarkFan8901> it still has the issue of the 'next instruction' thing though
07:26:10 <esolangs> [[Gray Snail]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=198579&oldid=198578 * Squidmanescape * (-318) I was too sleep deprived. It's still against policy.
07:26:26 <MarkFan8901> MarkFan8901: match & case is more along the lines of modal logic
07:26:38 <MarkFan8901> where instead of strict if's you simply have one thing caused by another
07:27:41 <de67> you can also have pjfn, which is easier about, cuz its Pop, Jump Forward N times
07:28:30 <de67> just wrap around?
07:28:51 <de67> or warp i to a parallel reality
07:28:56 <de67> where time goes backwards
07:29:12 <de67> and all the semantics are fucked up
07:29:59 <MarkFan8901> okay we're starting to think of roping the language in a little more
07:30:05 <de67> how about, prn, Pop, roll N times
07:30:30 <MarkFan8901> the way it works is that functions are delimited by newlines
07:30:48 <MarkFan8901> MarkFan8901: and you call functions via $n, where n is the line number
07:31:04 <de67> MarkFan8901: rolling a stack is a black magic trick thats usually illegal
07:31:25 <de67> but basically, you pop the top, and you insert it to the bottom
07:31:53 <de67> rolling a stack has a chance of summoning ctulhu
07:31:58 <de67> but that has not happened yet
07:32:18 <MarkFan8901> MarkFan8901: we had an idea for calling a function by the number on the top of the stack
07:32:26 -!- de67 has quit (Quit: ctulhu ate me).
07:32:54 <MarkFan8901> but the issue with that is it'd couple plain ol numbers with line numbers
07:33:10 <MarkFan8901> which would probably result in some very indecipherable programs being generated
07:33:26 <MarkFan8901> then we thought of pushing line numbers themselves onto the stack, distinct from nomral numbers
07:33:32 <MarkFan8901> but that introduces the concept of quoting

07:46:23 <de67> you should google.it
07:48:20 <MarkFan8901> we're not sure how we'd implement this in fai
07:48:32 <MarkFan8901> but this would be really funny to see in another esolang
07:49:48 <de67> i think 2 of my esolangs have it
07:50:14 <de67> my idea is that lottery scheduling could be used for control flow
07:50:26 <de67> by allowing dynamic adjustments to ticket count
07:50:51 <de67> something like pstc Pop and subtract from ticket count
07:51:12 <de67> and patc Pop and Add to Ticket Count
07:51:35 <MarkFan8901> what if you made an esolang which was a list of functions
07:51:47 <MarkFan8901> and the only commands you could do in those functions is add/subtract the tickets from other functoins
07:52:14 <MarkFan8901> then execution of a program would randomly run a function until all of them had exactly 0 tickets
07:52:29 <de67> that reminds me of SMETANA
07:53:05 <de67> but this one could get chaotic really quickly
07:55:05 <MarkFan8901> theres probably a way to reduce three star programmer to smetana
07:55:27 <de67> three star programmer is probably tc
08:00:19 <de67> i have a quite old draft for a 2d esolang
08:00:36 <de67> i think its probably tc
08:00:52 <de67> even if i remove some commands that i initially thoguht to be neccessary
08:01:09 <de67> MarkFan8901: its unreleased
08:01:15 <de67> cuz i thought it was stupif
08:01:24 <de67> i think its not that stupid
08:01:32 <de67> compared to [[OpenBSD toaster]]
08:02:03 <de67> iirc the command set was this (i removed the unneccessary commands):
08:02:23 <de67> c -- dequeue a bit, if its 1, rotate clockwise
08:02:30 <de67> 1 -- enqueue 1
08:02:36 <de67> 0 -- enqueue 0
08:03:00 <de67> c rotates 90 degrees btw
08:03:07 <de67> thats kinda it
08:03:23 <de67> it can simulate cyclic tag
08:03:47 <MarkFan8901> only being able to rotate clockwise seems pretty weird
08:04:52 <de67> maybe i need to add a command
08:05:24 <MarkFan8901> what if you try programming in it in its current state
08:06:10 <de67> i need to visualize a program in my head
08:06:17 <de67> i have apahantasia btw
08:06:34 <de67> text editors are alrwady 2d
08:06:46 <MarkFan8901> what if they let you move in 2d space freely
08:07:13 <de67> old compuers let you roma around the entire screen freely
08:07:22 <de67> modern ttys restrict you to the current lind
08:07:57 <MarkFan8901> os for an old computer which uses a 2d shell script
08:08:30 <de67> its just the text cursor could go anywhere
08:08:50 <MarkFan8901> we think modern ttys do also let you put the cursor anywhere
08:08:51 <de67> even backwards, even into past carriage returns and newlines
08:09:16 <de67> MarkFan8901: nowadays vertical arrow keys are used for command history

16:56:37 <esolangs> [[User:Zzo38/Untitled 6]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=198670&oldid=197308 * Zzo38 * (+314) Sometimes esolangs includes stuff which is not implemented, so I can put a nonexistent ASN.1 tag in the schema if I want to do.
17:03:15 <zzo38> Now ASN.1X has two types and one class with names of military ranks (although not related to the military ranks, I think).

17:06:37 <zzo38> Possibly, a article in esolang wiki can be made relating to character sets and encodings; there are some articles but putting in one article is also possible including such things like the variant of Baudot and Hollerith and EBCDIC codes used in CLC-INTERCAL, and possibly the floating-point Unicode that was mentioned on the esoteric programming IRC many years ago
17:10:52 <b_jonas> does it cunt if there's a page about Jelly, an esoteric language that comes with a character encoding used only for that esolang?
17:11:16 <b_jonas> but the page on the esowiki is very lacking
17:15:35 <zzo38> I agree that the page of Jelly is lacking many things.
17:16:20 <zzo38> It is separate from what I mentioned although not exclusive with it (and a page about character sets could mention Jelly as well)

17:20:30 <ais523> de67 (if you logread): I'm pretty sure a 2D language with "nop", "enqueue 0", "enqueue 1", "dequeue and rotate clockwise if a 1 was dequeued" would be TC; the trick is to implement cyclic tag using an encoding of the queue in which a single cyclic tag queue element corresponds to multiple 2D language queue elements
17:21:23 <ais523> something like 001111 as a representation of 0 and 0111101111 as a representation of 1
17:22:27 <ais523> the idea is that each cyclic tag production is written backwards on the line below the main flow of the program, with dequeue commands at each end of the production and each end of the main flow line
17:22:59 <ais523> then when dequeuing a 1, you end up moving to the end of the production, executing it, and going back to where you were, and when dequeueing a 0, the code in the production doesn't run
17:23:29 <ais523> and the unconditional 1111 at the end is enough to put the program into an infinite loop
17:24:08 <ais523> actually, this sort of construction could likely be used to implement a queue automaton rather than just cyclic tag, so the language is likely to be able to run at the queue-based speed limit
17:25:12 <b_jonas> yeah, I think this would allow you to set up arbitrary control flow
17:25:46 <ais523> the dequeue command reminds me of the "G" command from sansism (which turns anti-clockwise if the current memory cell is nonzero), and is inspired by a G looking a bit like an anticlockwise arrow
17:27:19 <b_jonas> ais523: it reminds me of the ]x command pair in Little Man
17:27:40 <ais523> the language is also very similar to Re:direction (in Re:direction you enqueue turn-to-absolute-direction commands onto a queue and have a command to pop a command from the queue and execute it, and in this language you enqueue turn-by-relative-direction commands onto a queue and have a command to pop a command from the queue and execute it)
17:28:00 <b_jonas> it's a weird pair of commands that I never used and don't even have a plan for using them, but the language is restricted enough that you can find uses for even weird commands like those
17:28:20 <ais523> although one difference is that Re:direction also executes the commands when enqueueing them, not just when dequeueing them
17:28:58 * ais523 looks up whether it's spelled "enqueueing" or "enqueuing"
17:29:59 <ais523> Wiktionary just lists them as alternatives (and likewise for "queueing"/"queuing") without stating when/where each form is preferred
17:30:09 <ais523> although, my IRC client's spellchecker prefers "queuing"
