It would then likely talk about how it could be used to... 09:23:40 generate code, translate between languages, or even analyze the historical context of these languages, acknowledging their unique design philosophies and often unconventional approaches to computation. 09:24:02 [[Brainfuck]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199802&oldid=198704 * Dragoneater67mobile * (-54,258) Blanked the page 09:24:28 esolangs: what would chatg[[Nrainfuck]]pt do 09:24:33 MarkFan8901: That’s a tricky one! I have a set of grid cells marked in a square grid that has at most 35 columns and at most 35 rows, and I want to cover the marked cells with rectangles. The rectangles can overlap, and have to cover all marked cells but no other cells. But I have a bunch of complications. Each rectangle costs 4 demerits, except 15:04:33 that if it only has one column then it costs 3 demerits. You're allowed to omit columns from a rectangle so it's not quite connected, but each omitted column costs 1 demerit. And you're allowed to reorder the columns but not the rows. I have multiple instances of this problem, between 3 and 100 instances. Do you happen to know what kind of tool I should use for this? Currently I'm just using single 15:04:39 column wide triangles, but I'm starting to think that single row might be better so I'll try that later. 15:04:48 hmm, so if we remove the featured language, we'd need to come up with a new layout or something new to add there 15:05:51 obviously we should install DPL4 and have the featured language rotate on each page refresh /j 15:05:54 well, /hj 15:06:02 or, we can leave an empty space! /hj 15:06:40 b_jonas: given the complications, I haven't seen a problem like that before, but I think you would have a large premium on putting columns with similar patterns near each other 15:06:53 Oh, and the marked shape is symmetric around the center row. 15:06:55 hm, maybe i should try creating a draft for a featureless main page 15:07:48 And the whole thing probably isn't even worth optimize, my simple solutions are probably enough, but it's an on topic enough thing for esoteric so I might as well ask and learn something in case a higher stake version comes up later. 15:07:50 why did i decide that putting lynx section at the bottom (instead of putting it at the top) of my page was a good idea 15:08:15 there is a lot of flexibility in what you can do with columns, but none in what you can do with rows 15:08:30 Correct 15:09:02 if two adjacent rows have the same columns marked, they may as well be treated as one row for the purpose of the algorithm 15:09:54 Yes, I have already merged identical columns, that saves a few columns but not many. 15:10:02 and if they don't, a rectangle will need to start in each row that is not a subset of the previous row (likewise end in each row that is not a subset of the next row) 15:10:32 so the only flexibility is to try to avoid needing to start or end multiple rectangles on the same rwo 15:10:40 This is for an esoteric programming goal, a contraption made of a few Factorio 1.1 combinators, and the demerits are the number of condition lines in a decider combinator. 15:10:41 (and to avoid demerits for gaps) 15:10:50 NO 15:11:00 it's a contraption made of a few Factorio 2.0 combinators 15:11:02 (brain fart) 15:11:25 that's why the decider can have many conditions (two thousand in at least one instance) 15:12:55 I think an algorithm should look for marked cells with unmarked cells above or below them, and work out how to cover those 15:15:10 well yes, that's what my current algorithm does, it just always places one column wide rectangles that are as tall as possible 15:16:34 [[User:Dragoneater67/Sandbox/Layout box full]] N https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?oldid=198837 * Dragoneater67 * (+463) Created page with "{| cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" | width="100%" height="100%" style="border: 1px solid #CCC" |

I think that's probably going to be worse than trying to cover all the "newly introduced" tiles with a single rectangle and expanding that as far as possible 15:19:40 yeah, ideally I should try to expand them to the right if possible and see if that saves anything -- though I'll first try single row rectangles because I think that might be a significant save 15:21:07 -!- aadenboy2 has quit (Ping timeout: 261 seconds). 15:25:11 [[User:Dragoneater67/Sandbox]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=198839&oldid=198801 * Dragoneater67 * (+2867) 15:25:30 [[User:Dragoneater67/Sandbox]] M https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=198840&oldid=198839 * Dragoneater67 * (+0) 15:27:08 [[User:Dragoneater67/Sandbox]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=198841&oldid=198840 * Dragoneater67 * (-100) vertical layout?
