You just feel it i guess hahaha 00:50:21 i want go into an essay but,, who really cares like truly who cares? 00:50:55 do ppl even realize the shitstorm that is the future ? vibe coded C operating systems and firmware, running in your brain implant ? 00:51:34 why am i even caring, im just some ranodm poor kid in some place, gaaaaaaaah this is not right move 00:52:02 I mean the premise is interesting 00:52:31 I could imagine taking a survey and trying to compound all of what people think is "readable" into a language 00:53:37 True. It all started after I've learned and gotten comfortable with Rust. I didn't get comfortable with Rust despite "mastering" it. Rust syntax AND semantics are really just,... unintutive + questionable. Not to mention lackluster protections regarding logic safety bugs. Like ok, it's hard to overflow stuff in safe rust, but it's still easy to do logic bugs / other types of memroy safety bugs. 00:53:42 Let's start with readability 00:53:57 I love Golang, let's get that out of way. Go is the best programming language in terms of readability and feel (ALMOST the best) 00:54:37 -!- amby has quit (Remote host closed the connection). 00:54:46 So, my language's syntax is heavily inspired by Go, which is good. I also think syntax and semantics being readable and intutitve help reduce security bugs, by reducing mental clutter /boilerplate on programmer, I am already running on thin wires (in brain) hahahaha 00:55:24 Aside from similar-ish syntax, I actually improve upon Go's syntax further 00:56:19 FOr instance, by swapping out "&&" and "||" with "and" and "or" respectifully, while retaining the old school operators for bitwise. (& and |), this way there's 0 chance & and | are ever confused with AND or OR, .. small, but counts. sooo many bugs by this, compiler,e ven "strict" ones like rust, happily take ur & instead of && and compile, lol. 00:57:22 So it's not just "Rust with golang's syntax", its more of... idk, its own syntax. I Think it's awesome + full of cool little things like that, that help reduce security bugs while also improving readablity relative to other languages.. 00:58:28 Tha'ts mostly it for the uh syntax, jsut high overview, as for actual actual security features, theres a couple 00:59:01 Starting off, sane defaults. I know, boring right, warnings as errors as default ? wahaaat? No concept of warnings only errosr? woah. ok. 00:59:55 Default arthiemtic is always checked no overflow ??! even on floats (even if it means going against the hardware "spec" its trash spec anyway, i dont like hardware, iw ill make my own hardware and os with my language) 01:00:02 Yes, checked even on bitwise operations 01:01:26 checked for no overflow? as in it maxes out at the highest representation? 01:01:54 or does it prevent it entirely 01:02:12 as in, a check is inserted in the generated binary before the artheimtic operation, if it goes out of bounds of the integer type or whatever, the program is set to crash safely. 01:02:40 the alternative is what many languages do, take rust for example, they just let it overflow lol so if u have integer overflow, ur back to c level safety 01:03:07 well not nessacrily, but it does create painful logic bugs not easy to diagnose versuse most other typesof bugs. 01:03:47 I don't imagine there would be the concept of overflow for floats and bitwise ops 01:03:50 anyway, those are sane "defaults" basically, nonthing groundbreaking yet.. 01:03:58 yes, ther eis 01:04:14 floats overflow is called cutely "precison loss" 01:04:36 that's not overflow though? 01:04:50 true, but is sussy + can create sec issues 01:04:56 but more importantly, i hate the hardawre float spec 01:04:57 inf/nan 01:05:02 that is the more "overflow" 01:05:22 not having access to inf would be an issue 01:05:31 if your doing graphics and stuff, yes. 01:05:48 -!- Melvar has quit (Ping timeout: 257 seconds). 01:05:56 but i hate it, its like they wanted a "async" error mechanism so they invented the inf/nan shit 01:06:08 anyhow 01:06:24 no type inference 01:06:30 let x = 1 + 100 01:06:39 can you tell me what x type is in rust ? 01:06:54 admittedly I've never used rust, but presumably int or float of some kind 01:07:21 int32 01:07:42 now, the problem is, making type inference is really nice for programmer, im not gonna lie, BUT, it allows dangerous oversight 01:08:30 if programmer is not "in-your-eyes" reminded that x is int32 or something, they could do logic that assumes otherwise, subtly, and create extremely complicated bugs to debug (if they even find them out lol most of bugs of this way, usually depend on state, and some delay, rarely causing overflows or logic problems) 01:08:41 by making types expliclit, a lot of crying is saved, i love myself 01:08:46 do you love me ? 01:09:09 too early to say. all of this has been very interesting though 01:09:30 anyway, enough of integer overflow talk 01:09:52 my language will also have no precennde in operations (bootstrap compiler will have arthiemtic precedence, but not later phases) 01:09:53 so 01:10:01 own x int64 = 1 + 2 + 3 01:10:16 is invalid code. BUT, own x int64 = (1 + 2) + 3 IS valid 01:10:38 ooh, harsh 01:10:52 Programmers are not mathematicans, idk even remember predcedence table lmao but it can also create mind bending bugs that you realize was so simple, 01:11:18 my problems is no tbugs, its bugs that lead to getting hacked. getting hacked is no longer just "oopise my ip leaked and a crypto miner is running on my pc. no problem i can just close it and touch grass" no habibi, that is not how it works 01:11:41 cameras, constantly connected, evern if u live in a shack ur nehighbhor isn't.. etc etc 01:11:41 [[Talk:Tapeworm]] N https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?oldid=199434 * ImOnlyHereForReversibleComputing * (+1318) Created page with "== Infinite loop == The infinite loop program does not appear to run infinitely as-written. make a backup of a running GNU/Linux system if it sometimes restarts due to a problem with the computer so it is not guaranteed to remain running long enough to do it at once? ← normally I make uncompressed backups whose filesystem structure is the same as that on the original machine, which allows for incrementally updating a backup using rsync; that would probably work in your case too (although I'm not sure whether, if 11:06:02 there is a power failure while rsync is writing a file, that rsync will notice that the file is wrong on the next sync) 11:07:49 actually rsync doesn't seem to be very good in terms of atomicity, it has an "--fsync" option which would not be sufficient in this case and doesn't seem to offer anything stronger 11:08:58 --delay-updates might work (it at least uses a rename-over approach to updating files) but seems questionable in other ways, maybe --delay-updates --fsync would be reliable enough 11:09:52 (it also has the problem of temporarily using double the normal disk space, which can be a problem for backups as they often almost fill the resulting disk) 11:11:43 as in, a check is inserted in the generated binary before the artheimtic operation, if it goes out of bounds of the integer type or whatever, the program is set to crash safely. ← Rust actually has an option to do this (although it isn't the default in release mode), but I'm not sure it really gives you that much safety unless you consider unexpected crashes to be safe 11:13:47 [[User:Hotcrystal0/Sandbox]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199462&oldid=199435 * Yeah, sure, that makes tracking ownership much easier since there is no such thing. 11:20:48 Like the whole motivation of Rust is that you can write C/C++-like code that's memory safe without too much hassle. 11:20:59 Which means having references. 11:21:19 Anyway. Not impressed :P 11:22:53 fwiw I view Rust as having too much influence from C and C++ and think it's really holding the language back 11:23:10 (e.g. raw pointers in Rust don't have lifetimes, but logically should) 11:23:15 I agree that alternative approaches (replacing, say, lifetimes by something else) could be interesting. Also daunting. 11:25:37 hmm. well, they do slices instead which are kind of like references that support (limited) pointer arithmetic 11:55:47 Rust lifetime generics (the situation in which you would write a lifetime explicitly) are interesting because they mostly don't give much power, other rules of the compiler ensure that anything a function can reference must be alive at the time 11:56:13 they're basically only useful for allowing functions/methods to manipulate values that other parts of the code need to live a long time 11:56:55 e.g. if a function returns a value that needs to outlive the function call 11:57:38 I have been wondering whether it might be possible to replace most of this with a sort of continuation-passing style (in which functions return their values via callbacks), I think most common uses of lifetimes can be replaced like that but some of them can't be 12:49:03 -!- PkmnQ has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer). 12:55:00 -!- PkmnQ has joined. 13:03:16 -!- Everything has joined. 13:06:36 [[Talk:lang without Quine with Quine]] N https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?oldid=199463 * None1 * (+348) Created page with "I doubt that the piece of text in this page is public domain. --~~~~" 13:12:53 [[Nope.]] M https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199464&oldid=193999 * None1 * (+0) /* Implementations */ Sort in alphabetical order 13:23:04 [[User:Blashyrkh/Golf]] M https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199465&oldid=199218 * Blashyrkh * (+389) Add two program forms 13:24:29 -!- Lord_of_Life has quit (Quit: Laa shay'a waqi'un moutlaq bale kouloun moumkine). 13:26:22 [[Talk:Processor/1]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199466&oldid=15194 * Raiseafloppafan7741 * (+488) /* ordering */ new section 13:26:33 -!- Lord_of_Life has joined. 13:31:49 -!- Lord_of_Life has quit (Read error: Connection reset by peer). 13:32:04 -!- Lord_of_Life_ has joined. 13:33:24 -!- Lord_of_Life_ has changed nick to Lord_of_Life. 13:33:36 [[User:Raiseafloppafan7741/Constant language directory]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199467&oldid=199454 * None1 * (+501) /* ConstantLanguage() */ Add a few 13:50:40 [[Talk:Hello, world!]] N https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?oldid=199468 * None1 * (+348) Created page with "I doubt that the piece of text in this page is public domain. --~~~~" 13:51:32 [[Talk:Hello, world!]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199469&oldid=199468 * Raiseafloppafan7741 * (+401) 14:00:58 [[Hello, world!]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199470&oldid=193289 * Dragoneater67 * (-41388) /* Name */ remove potential copyright infringement 14:01:59 HOLY CRAP THATS A LOT 14:02:03 [[Hello, world!]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199471&oldid=199470 * Hotcrystal0 * (+1892) 14:02:59 [[Hello, world!]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199472&oldid=199471 * Hotcrystal0 * (-267) 14:04:50 [[Fizzbuzz]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199473&oldid=178595 * Hotcrystal0 * (-1848) remove potentially copyright-violating material 14:05:00 [[Fizzbuzz]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199474&oldid=199473 * Hotcrystal0 * (+0) 14:25:31 -!- Lord_of_Life has quit (Quit: Laa shay'a waqi'un moutlaq bale kouloun moumkine). 14:26:47 -!- Lord_of_Life has joined. 14:32:21 [[Vegetable Juice]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199475&oldid=199400 * A random guy * (+1447) Start of Vegetable Juice. 14:33:05 -!- FreeFull has quit. 14:36:32 [[Vegetable Juice]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199476&oldid=199475 * A random guy * (+1) 14:53:03 -!- de67 has joined. 15:10:16 [[Special:Log/newusers]] create * SB112butiforgotmypassword * New user account 15:10:50 'nother n00b! I had considered formatting a USB file system device as FAT32 to store backups, and then later copy them to DVD. (I don't need long file names, since the original file names are neither CP437 nor Unicode and will be stored inside of other files instead.) 20:41:44 MarkFan8901: I think the interesting level of abstraction to look at is proteins, rather than individual codons 20:42:34 slight changes to DNA still usually lead to a functioning organism because that just creates a slight change to the protein it codes for (and if a protein is really important it can be coded for multiple times to ensure it gets produced) 20:42:55 the interesting part is how the proteins work together to make the cells work 20:43:24 I will want something that might work even if the power fails in the middle of the backup, to be resumed later, and that can store the appropriate metadata that can be restored later, as well as handling sparse files correctly. And, sometimes some files might be changed before continuing the backup. Specifying priority for files would also be helpful. 20:43:28 Is such a thing possible? 20:46:01 ais523: could it be future-proofing to systems where uint64_t is unsigned int instead? 20:46:10 ais523: true 20:46:25 b_jonas: I think I suggested above that it could be future-proofing against 128-bit unsigned long 20:46:47 (CHERI has 128-bit pointers and longs are normally pointer-sized on Linux, so it is not a totally implausible scenario) 20:47:30 zzo38: it's clearly possible but might require writing new software, I don't think the standard tools take this scenario into account 20:47:47 [[Indirect Regular Gobbledegook]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199560&oldid=199557 * Maglang * (+0) 20:49:07 oh hm something we just realized 20:49:15 (If the backup program includes its own source code which is copied to the backup disk, this is also helpful so that you can restore the backup.) 20:49:23 another interesting thought we had earlier was coming from a language based around chemistry 20:49:42 and it made us think about if a language could be made where the order of the commands don't matter, but rather just the quantity of them 20:49:55 so HOH would be the same thing as H2O 20:50:24 Making the backup files to use DOS file names and not use the other features of the file system other than directory structure, also seem would be helpful, and also allowing it to be split into many files; this will also ensure it can work with many kind of target file systems, since the data for the origin file system can be stored within the files instead. 20:50:25 we realize that protiens are probably this 20:52:01 [[Indirect Regular Gobbledegook]] https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?diff=199561&oldid=199560 * Maglang * (+1) 20:54:32 zzo38: I can satisfy the dos filenames part by backing up files into a few hundred tarballs, though I don't do it for *DOS* filenames specifically, but because when I started this scheme I used to write those tarballs onto CDs with ISO-9660 file system which has similar limitations on file names. there are extensions to the file system, but it's easy enough to not depend on them. 20:56:45 I did say I wanted to record the backups on CDs or DVDs but to first record them on something else and then copy them to CD/DVD afterward. I know of the similar limit, which is one reason why DOS file names is helpful; if you could also mount FAT32 with only DOS file names then it avoids needing to store long file names which will never be used. 20:57:18 [[File talk:.irg logo.png]] N https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?oldid=199562 * Aadenboy * (+317) Created page with "almost identical to [[:File:Irglogo.png]] ~~~~" 20:57:27 [[File talk:Irglogo.png]] N https://esolangs.org/w/index.php?oldid=199563 * Aadenboy * (+319) Created page with "almost identical to [[:File:.irg logo.png]] ~~~~" 20:57:54 but I don't satisfy your requirement that I can back up from a running machine.
