02:40:36 <fizzie> I read https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PCI_passthrough_via_OVMF#Isolating_the_GPU (Arch wiki tends to have pretty good documentation for other distributions too), and it sounds like while it's *possible* to fully pass through a GPU to a guest VM, it's really quite a bit of hassle if you don't want to do it exclusively.
02:43:57 <fizzie> And the other alternatives for GPU virtualization don't seem much better, based on a little bit of research; Nvidia's hardware-assisted vGPU thing should be high-performance but doesn't support consumer cards at all; paravirtualization-style "fake guest graphics driver forwarding to host GPU" approaches lose a lot of performance and suffer from compatibility problems; and emulation of a modern
02:43:59 <fizzie> GPU isn't really a thing.
05:31:30 <hppavilion[1]> I wonder if you could make a consistent (incorrect) model of physics replacing trigonometric functions with some other oscillating functions, like triangle waves.
05:34:37 <hppavilion[1]> I imagine you'd have to replace the euclidean norm with the taxicab norm, which would change the value of the dot product... and it would impose distinct, special axes onto the universe
05:41:31 <zzo38> I don't know. Possibly many additional stuff would also need changed in addition to what you mentioned, if you were to try such athing.
05:51:11 <hppavilion[1]> yeah that would just be the starting point. change that, change everything which depends on it. See if it works
05:54:49 <hppavilion[1]> First hiccup I see is that the derivate of a triangle wave is a square wave, whereas the derivative of a sinusoid is another sinusoid. and the antiderivative is something even more exotic.
05:58:27 <hppavilion[1]> and the derivative of a square wave is a... const wave, I guess you could call it? a function equal to 0 everywhere it's defined but with regularly spaced holes.

09:10:10 <b_jonas> fizzie: I see, thank ypu
09:17:16 <b_jonas> hppavilion: you can't just "replace the euclidean norm with the taxicab norm", because then you lose rotation invariance. locally in a small environment around a point where you're looking, the distances still have to work the same *to a first order* as in our space so that you can rotate the space and have it look the same. however, you can make the space curved, which changes distances if you look in
09:17:22 <b_jonas> a larger scale, and changes the second order term of distances locally. in 2D you get three possibilities, and it turns out that you aren't *replacing* circular functions as such, but adding more circular or hyperbolic functions where the formulas for Euclidean geometry had none: http://www.madore.org/~david/weblog/d.2013-12-17.2175.trigonometrie-triangle.html#d.2013-12-17.2175

19:13:51 <fizzie> Thanks for the VM tip, though -- got Windows installed by *starting* the installation in a VM (with only the destination drive and the install media mapped into it), then at the first reboot turning the VM off and configuring the target drive as the first boot option. After that, the installer went fine.
19:14:16 <fizzie> Would've been nice to stick to keeping it in a VM permanently, but eh, good enough.
