22:07:53 <salpynx> hi, thought I'd loiter here a bit given all the recent admin topicality discussion. IRC might be more efficient
22:09:11 <salpynx> I appreciate the admin effort, thanks for implementing the Category warning so quickly! Wasn't expecting that to go in immediately
22:21:22 <ais523> I'd been thinking about it for a while, thanks for spurring me to actually do it
22:22:42 <ais523> I've been procrastinating on starting a proper topicality discussion for months or possibly years (although it was more a case of not having enough mental energy)
22:23:09 <ais523> I guess I should also thank the people finding new and creative things that need rules against them, in order to inform the decisions about where the lines should be
22:27:39 <ais523> oh, it's not just a warning, it actually prevents the page being created
22:37:25 <salpynx> that's what basically what I was suggesting. It happens so rarely I don't think it's a problem to be admin only

22:52:33 <korvo> salpynx: Thanks for weighing in. I appreciate that moderate folks are adding moderate opinions; it makes me look like a git, but that's fine.
23:05:28 <b_jonas> I just feel like there's so many pages where I'd find it hard to judge if they're on topic. I hope it'll be easier for you, or whatever other people you rope in as wiki admins.
23:06:28 <ais523> part of the problem is that I'm also one of the people who just has an esolang idea and then posts it that day, without an interpreter or much analysis (beyond, sometimes, a computational class proof)
23:07:05 <ais523> I think my esolangs posted like that are better than the average other person's esolangs posted like that – but I also see my activity as beneficial and find it hard to characterise how others' is different
23:10:27 -!- Sgeo has joined.
23:10:38 <salpynx> heh, np @korvo! I think we agree on being harsh against user created concept categories, and joke proofs etc., I'm quite liberal on what I'd accept for language pages (high tolerance for absurd art), but in most cases I find myself agreeing with your handling of other users via talkpages
23:11:29 <ais523> fwiw I see both korvo and salpynx as being on the more exclusionary side of the conversation (but that's partly because I expect a nontrivial number of people to believe that the wiki should accept absolutely anything)
23:16:28 <korvo> I mostly want consistency in how rules are enforced. I was raised by lawyers, which is like being raised by wolves except that I use too many words instead of too few.
23:17:13 <korvo> I want to see extra sandboxes and user-editable pages removed in order to stay consistent with the single-sandbox and no-social-media rules, for example. I don't mind that people have personal stuff on user pages per se.
23:17:42 <korvo> salpynx: Thanks. FWIW I wish that I were able to be more polite and understanding with the younger contributors; I know that I'm getting old and out-of-touch.
23:18:05 <salpynx> I find the not fully fleshed out ideas are totally fine, but its something about quantity of similar edits shifts it into a meta wiki editing activity for its own sake, and diminishes the information content of whatever was posted. I'm struggling to define it too
23:19:39 -!- somefan has quit (Remote host closed the connection).
23:24:45 <salpynx> I'd defend almost any one of that recent user that was blocked's language pages individually, even though I can't quite figure out what was going on with most many seemed like the had a kernel of an idea, but the ignored warnings about using preview, vandalism and unhelpful edits to existing pages shifted it into a pattern of disruptive behaviour
23:25:12 <salpynx> the warnings and temp block seemed appropriate
23:25:53 <ais523> I think they were undesirable for a similar reason as LLM-generated pages are, as in they appeared to be saying something but actually weren't
23:25:59 <ais523> but I don't think they were LLM-produced
23:26:12 <salpynx> I feel a little bad I may have encouraged them by interacting, but I was trying to be welcoming and demonstrate wiki norms or something. I've kinda fallen into this trap before
23:26:51 <ais523> I would have been lighter on them if they weren't making my job almost impossible
23:27:19 <ais523> many of the pages there should have been deleted earlier (e.g. the zero-sized images) but I just couldn't keep track of them because edits were being spammed in such quantity
23:32:56 <salpynx> Does mediawiki have a built-in mechanism to force new users go through a draft review process for their first edit? I wouldn't want that to add admin overhead, but it seems that some users are collecting mediwiki accounts to 'play-mediawiki' games. esolangs seems very permissive and a target
23:33:59 <salpynx> I recall some userpages listing other mediawikis users were banned from as a kind of social-media badge, which is equally funny, and worrying
23:34:11 <ais523> salpynx: not built in
23:34:22 -!- svm has changed nick to msv.
23:34:32 <ais523> the edit filter extension is programmable enough to come up with things like the Introduce yourself page
23:35:22 <ais523> (which is designed to be difficult for spambot frameworks to navigate, I'm not sure a single spambot has managed to get through it yet, the occasional human looking to spam has though)
23:35:45 <salpynx> some kind of initial speed bump to halt the new sign-ups creating multiple pages a day. That's a pattern that seems to repeat, then they settle down to more constructive edits, or move on
23:37:38 <salpynx> I forgot about the intial captcha coding challenge, that is clever and seems successful. It ensures we only get human spammers with a certain level of obsessiveness :D
23:38:14 <ais523> the spambots were actually able to get through the Befunge captcha, which is kind-of amazing
23:38:26 <ais523> that's why we needed the Introduce yourself on top of that
23:38:41 <ais523> I'm not sure whether someone taught the spambots Befunge or whether they delegated to human CAPTCHA-solvers
23:41:05 -!- Guest12 has joined.
23:42:50 <b_jonas> or if someone thought the spambots just this one specific type of befunge program, the radix 9 decode
23:43:37 <korvo> salpynx: The sad fact is that we already have a fantastic spam filter. The analogy I usually use in IRC is the question of city managers when faced with a wave of graffiti: how to gently discourage vandalism while permitting artists to florish?
23:44:09 <ais523> b_jonas: I've often wondered what would have happened if we changed the captcha to include some OS commands that gathered system information, in the hope of tricking the spambots into revealing information about themselves
23:44:23 <ais523> but there are numerous reasons why that would have been a bad idea, and it's too late to try now
23:44:26 <korvo> ...Well, okay, it's not sad that we have a filter. It's sad that the filter has limited effect.
23:44:59 <b_jonas> ais523: yeah, hope they're running without adequate sandboxing, send them a full reverse shell, and steal all of their botnet.
23:45:08 <salpynx> easy to apply Templates that point to relevant constructive guidelines seems like a good way for non admins to flag high speed edits would enable better community policing. From fighting spam elsewhere I know it's a battle of resources, you lose if you have to construct a polite custom msg each time, in case it's not a bot
23:45:31 <korvo> salpynx: BTW another proposition I've had, only slightly deletionist, is to delete [[language list]]. I think that many of our youngsters get some sort of yomi or aura from tagging the wall, so to speak, and [[language list]] is one of several tagging spots.
23:46:20 <ais523> korvo: I have been planning to replace that for a while, but the semi-serious language list isn't quite in the right space to replace it yet
23:47:09 <b_jonas> I don't like the semi-serious language list
23:47:14 <korvo> ais523: From our last conversation, I recall that the main issue was that we have lots of incoming bluelinks to it, including from templates and MW includes, which would need to be fixed up to either point to [[:category:languages]] or be completely reworded.
23:47:37 <b_jonas> could we delete the joke language list and the semi-serious language list but keep the language list?
23:47:41 <korvo> (As always, if you need some mass editing done and you're just not feeling like doing it, but you can specify it, just ask me to do it.)
23:48:06 <salpynx> I tended to avoid adding my own things to [[langauge list]] because I didn't quite see the point of it over Category:Languages, they are both unwieldy. I feel even stronger against the 'semi-serious language list' though, it's a watered down 2.0 that will likely suffer from the same fundamental problem
23:48:08 <ais523> b_jonas: I think the SSLL is better than the current language list (which is mostly just redundant to the category)
23:48:09 <b_jonas> it won't help too much, but I feel like a joke language list just encourages a few people to write joke languages and doesn't really have positive effects
23:48:32 <korvo> Gonna leave in a few for the bar. Either running Super Metroid or Link to the Past, bartender's choice.
23:48:37 <salpynx> lol, multpile haters of the 'semi-serious' list!
23:48:45 <ais523> fwiw, with these topicality proposals, Category:Languages may turn into something more like the current SSLL due to merging languages that are too similar onto single pages
23:50:26 <ais523> but my ideal is that you can pick a random page and find something interesting
23:50:35 <ais523> a page listing all the BF equivalents is a lot more interesting than a page listing a single one would be
23:50:44 <korvo> salpynx: I think that the problem with "semi-serious" is that it's polysemous. For me, it might be something that I'm not sure is a real language, I guess? I don't use the category at all. But for some regular contributors it's a "lol xd random" sort of category, while for others it's a "I have not proven this to have coherent reduction" sorts of silliness.
23:51:02 <ais523> korvo: the page is clearly misnamed
23:51:10 <korvo> ais523: Yes! Make Special:Random interesting again!
23:51:25 <ais523> I think the goal is to exclude useless/uninteresting/redundant languages while not excluding esolangs just due to being esoteric
23:53:13 <salpynx> fwiw I strongly oppose merging historically separate pages like Lenguage and Unary, but for pretty specific reasons. They have a history, and I created an almost similar lang with slightly different features because the subtle differences once seemed very important to me. At some point it gets arguable, do we merge pages about all sub-species of cats (animal) into one article or not? I also don't think it's the most important argument to have :)
23:53:32 <ais523> maybe the original idea for a name was "serious language list" and then it was rejected because esolangs aren't considered serious by most people
23:53:54 <ais523> salpynx: I think merging pages with subtle differences is actually a good thing, as it helps you focus on the differences
23:54:21 <ais523> like, you can write once about the concept of using length as source code (including things like EOF sort-of being like a symbol), and then talk about the languages based on it and what the precise differences are
23:54:37 <korvo> salpynx: Hey, if it was good enough for Aristoteles to talk about~ Categorization is certainly hard. I think that, at least from what I recall at the time, ais523 is talking about concepts like [[constant language]], where we hashed out a unifying framework as infrastructure for an eventual removal of all (most?) of the constant-language pages.
23:55:19 <ais523> "length as source code" becomes super-interesting when you start thinking about non-integer lengths
23:56:38 <salpynx> I'd worry that if an existing language page contained a lot of information in context, merging could destroy that information, especially if performed by someone who wasn't familiar with the subtleties. Many esolangs have hidden peculiarities not immediately obvious. I'd worry assuming "sameness" could lose info _for pre-existing dense article_
23:56:56 <ais523> oh yes, it would have to be done carefully
23:57:05 <ais523> OTOH, that information is mostly not present even in the current pages
23:57:15 <korvo> Oh, also, consider that we have other ways of making bluelinks branch out. For example, check out the "main article" pattern I used on [[computable]], [[self-reproducing object]], or [[Turing tarpit]]. We *can* have fairly clean trees of articles with central hubs without listicles.
23:57:55 <ais523> https://esolangs.org/wiki/Lenguage is very unclear on the fact that the I/O is totally different from most BF derivatives (the only thing indicating it's different is the reference interpreter)
23:58:16 <korvo> salpynx: Yes, another good point. [[Lesser known programming languages]] is a recent one, or [[prehistory of esoteric programming languages]] is a personal favorite. Sometimes we gotta do research.
23:58:51 <ais523> fwiw, I think listicles, perhaps accompanied by a separate article about the concept, are actually a good format for conveying esolang knowledge
