11:40:00 <b_jonas> does someone happen to know a datetime library that can handle year numbers at least 11 digits long, ideally 14 digits long, and ideally can handle fractional seconds to nanosecond precision? I'm thinking of adding example code to encode or decode Ur-time to the wiki page, but most libraries that can represent datetimes don't have enough range
11:42:59 <b_jonas> the limited range does make some sense by the way, because a common use of datetime libraries is formatting or parsing ISO 8601 date strings, but those formats break and can become ambiguous for far past or far future years

11:44:30 -!- cactushead has joined.
11:45:45 <b_jonas> if there's no such library then I'll just write two versions of the functions, one that uses a limited range datetime library and fails for far past or far future years, and one that inputs/outputs a custom broken down time structure with a larger range
11:47:21 <b_jonas> also now I'm on a tight deadline, I have only three and a half years to make a webpage that uses this date format in its urls.
11:48:12 <b_jonas> well, technically I could make a webpage later if it shows data created earlier

15:24:11 <fizzie> Bah. The new, faster rate of crawling is also making the system run out of disk space, mostly because of logs.
15:24:16 <fizzie> I had it set up as "rotate daily, keep up to 14 days, compress all but the current and previous file", but now even the yesterday + partial today uncompressed logfiles are ~4 GiB in size.

15:37:23 <fizzie> Oh well. Reconfigured it to rotate up to hourly whenever the size exceeds 100M, and keep less files, hopefully that'll keep it small enough. It all gets ingested into a Loki instance (running on a Real Computer™) within minutes anyway, so these on-system log files are kind of unnecessary.
15:37:49 <fizzie> Also found a gigabyte or so of old unused UML kernel sources for HackEso, so it wasn't a _total_ waste of time.

17:24:44 <fizzie> Probably, somehow. There's an `if` condition for the nginx access_log directive, and I could use either some suitably "random" condition (e.g., last digits of the millisecond timestamp) or the Lua support for actual (pseudo)random sampling.
17:24:47 <fizzie> I could also keep the normal request logging for everything else, and use the sampled-down logging specifically for the rejected requests.
17:28:07 <fizzie> I do wish they'd just stop, though, they're getting exactly the same 403 page for 99% of the requests so it's not like whoever's driving this thing is even getting any (new) human-produced data out of this whole exercise.

17:34:11 <b_jonas> fizzie: just to make sure, that 403 page is not like the Irregular Webcomics Draakslair forum, where even requests rejected when the server is overloaded still shows a webpage header of the forum that has to dynamically look up how many unread threads the logged in user has so the server still has to do lots of work for those requests, right?
17:35:41 <fizzie> No, it's fixed content and served from nginx rather than calling into PHP.
17:37:01 <fizzie> Right now it's served by nginx's Lua script module because I added in that experimental 2-second delay (which seems to have made no difference whatsoever to the crawling rate), but it's still very cheap compared to anything MediaWiki does.

17:39:00 <fizzie> Also while 1x 100% utilized CPU and 4/5.5 Mbps (in/out) of network traffic is _probably_ still negligible to the hosting company that's sponsoring the wiki, I felt a lot more confident about it when it was more like 15-20% CPU and 100/500 kbps of bandwidth.
17:39:21 <fizzie> I wonder if we actually have some set ingress/egress transfer limits set, actually. Maybe.

17:46:13 <b_jonas> yeah, it would be nice if there was some different response that made them slow down, like a different HTTP error code, or even just disconnecting the server from the network for half of each day for two months, but it doesn't sound very likely.
17:46:56 <b_jonas> the server is already sometimes giving different responses when it's very overloaded
17:47:39 <fizzie> From the dashboard, looks like it's set at 5 TB per... month, probably. Which means roughly a 15 Mbps sustained transfer rate, so at least we're still comfortably below that.
17:51:48 <fizzie> The provider's traffic usage chart covers a longer timespan than my own: https://zem.fi/tmp/iomart-traffic.png
17:54:09 <b_jonas> sure, keeping just some numeric statistics for a longer time than the logs that log every request makes sense
18:09:59 <fizzie> Definitely, but I also have only 14 days of retention for my own numeric (Prometheus) metrics, for no particular reason.
18:10:53 <fizzie> I have a vague recollection that Prometheus' default local on-disk TSDB can have only one global rentetion setting, instead of doing the thing where you have short retention for the "raw" full-resolution (one sample per scrape) data, but longer retention for precomputed (possibly downsampled) derived time series.
