00:25:28 <b_jonas> oh, do you mean on the wiki?
00:26:45 <b_jonas> if you put two spaces before a line in the wiki code then it's formatted as a pre-formatted code block, that's usually the best when you're quoting code like Fortran;
00:26:52 -!- Lord_of_Life has joined.
00:27:57 <b_jonas> no wait, one space at the start of each line is enough on Mediawiki,
00:28:26 <b_jonas> or alternately one space followed by <nowiki> followed by the whole code without extra space at the start of the lines followed by </nowiki>
00:28:48 <b_jonas> the latter can be necessary if the code has things that would otherwise be interpreted as wiki markup even in a code block indented with a space

00:34:38 <b_jonas> outside of the wiki but in HTML, the underlying css rule is { white-space: pre-wrap; } or { white-space: pre; } to disable HTML's silly historical accident rules to ignore whitespace in the source code in a lot of places
00:37:09 <b_jonas> HTML has these stupid default rules that any space or tab or newline in the text counts as just a space in the dispalyed text, consecutive spaces are collapsed, and whitespace near a tag is often also removed (I don't know the exact rule). so to get rid of this, there's this css property { white-space: pre-wrap; } that disables most of that default behavior and let space and newline in the source code
00:37:15 <b_jonas> just represent space and line break in the displayed text.
00:38:02 <b_jonas> there's one remaining rule that CSS can't fix, which is that inside attribute values, you have to ampersand-escape newlines (that doesn't work in normal text by the way, only in attributes). this is hard-baked into XML so it's too late for CSS to try to fix it.
00:46:25 <Sgeo> That reminds me, my favorite tag is <xmp>, just because of how... un-XML it is

08:13:13 <AnovaCometFloppa> I see "undefined behavior" being thrown around a lot in the context of C++ and it gave me a thought, what if the compiler/program did some incredibly strange things in undefined behavior cases? For example, C++11 apparently states that putting extra stuff in the std namespace is undefined behavior but doesn't do much harm in practice, but what if there was a compiler that destroys your entire system if you do that?

08:27:32 <int-e> this has pretty much happened. C compilers treat signed overflows as a thing that can't happen (it's been a while but when it was new it broke various overflow checks in the Linux kernel that were based on the result after overflow being smaller than before). Relatedly, turning loops where counters were supposed to overflow into infinite ones. More recently, completely optimizing out functions...
08:27:38 <int-e> ...that produced undefined behavior so calls to that function would call another function instead, depending on what the linker chose to put there.
